Chapter Twenty

Honor watched Zenith from the top of the winding staircase, gliding her hands along her satin-clad hips as he tossed his briefcase on the table in the foyer. He was later than usual, and she was actually surprised he’d come home at all rather than sleeping on his office couch or worse. When he’d become a sovereign in the government and they’d been newly married, she’d worried about all the late nights. She’d cried and gorged herself on chocolate from the forbidden market, watching hours of mindless television.

Their marriage had been about love, surprisingly enough. Their fathers had worked together in the government, and they’d met in the very office her husband now ruled. She’d been a novice intern, hoping to climb the ladder. But she’d given up her dream, against her father’s wishes, and chosen to become the wife of a politician. She should have learned from her mother’s experiences what her married life would be like. She’d spent her childhood and adolescence watching her father bustle here and there, their family life gobbled up by his drive for power. She’d accepted every excuse her mother had made but had resolved never to be that woman. Honor had decided to become like her father; she’d be the one attending the meetings instead of sitting around a quiet table of cold food, expecting the inevitable message not to wait up. But she’d dismissed all those memories when she began dating Zenith, thinking she could try harder than her mother had and have a successful marriage and husband at the same time. When he’d seen how unhappy she was becoming, Zenith had insisted she learn the “biz” of the government, bringing home work to teach her about what he did. She didn’t have the heart to tell him she already knew most of what he was explaining to her. She’d been happy to let him preen and strut in his designer suits, encouraging her involvement. It wasn’t until she was made superior that her backseat role became more than that, and when she’d been chosen to head the committee in charge of restructuring the aptitude exam, she had a power rush. The more people under her charge, the more she knew she was made for this.

And she hadn’t looked back. Her worries about a happy marriage were usurped by her need for control. She’d stopped crying over Zenith’s late nights because she had her own, and he stopped worrying about coming home at all. She played at being his wife in public, but she hadn’t genuinely cared in a long time.

So when Pelagic approached her with the scheme to keep Zenith distracted from the debacle with that Drudge, she’d laughed in his face. He had too many barnacles on his hull if he thought Zenith would ever be distracted by attention from her. But she couldn’t ignore the weighty promises he’d made for power if she succeeded. He would owe her, whatever she
